Creatures of Habit -Danielle, age 17

Wanted: three lost pets.
Here is how I found them:

When Pavlov’s Dog heard the chime of the bell,
he started streaking down the street and left
his master trailing with torn leash in hand.

And the dog traced the sound to the bell on
the collar of Schrödinger’s Cat,
who was sitting (or not sitting)
beneath the boughs of a great scalesia.

“Good,” the cat said (or did not say.)
“You made it just in time.”
Pavlov’s Dog wagged his tail and panted,
“You know me. I’m anything if not
punctual.”

“Well, I’ve called you to dinner,”
replied Schrödinger’s Cat (or perhaps she never did,)
“But I’m afraid dinner is still in the branches.”
The two looked up to where Darwin’s Finch
sat mocking them from its family tree,
rather far from its roots.

“You have me cornered but
you will never have me caught,” trilled the bird.
It told Pavlov’s Dog,
“You’re far too predictable,”
then told Schrödinger’s Cat,
“And you can’t think outside the box.”

And I, who had been wandering about
the winding wood for some time,
had followed the voices to ask for directions.
But when I discovered these creatures of habit,
I watched the stalemate from a distance,
intrigued.

“There’s still time till you have to head home,”
Darwin’s Finch was taunting as the situation evolved.
“After all, it’s never too late to change.”
Schrödinger’s Cat arched her back and hissed,
(or did not arch her back and hiss,)
“As it happens I’m hungry for prey,
and you are the natural selection.”

“Yes,” agreed Pavlov’s Dog,
drool dripping from his jaws.
“I’ve considered many feathers in this forest
but yours are the best fit.”
Darwin’s Finch ruffled its wings and said,
“Just try to climb up here,
and I’ll show you what this adapted beak can do.”

Having sighted the wanted sign,
I briefly thought of sending them back.
But I figured Pavlov’s Dog was tired of routine,
and Schrödinger’s Cat had never looked so alive.
So I went on my way without asking for directions,
happy to drift aimless on my own free will.
I will wander lost because I am bound
by no laws of man;
I am a creature of my own design.
